Fabinho completes Liverpool exit to join Al Ittihad

Fabinho's transfer to Saudi Pro League champions Al Ittihad has been confirmed, bringing the Brazil international's five-season stay at Anfield to an end. The midfielder was a crucial starting XI member under Jurgen Klopp during memorable Champions League and Premier League successes but now joins Nuno Espirito Santo's side who have also recruited Karim Benzema, N'Golo Kante and Jota this summer. There were concerns the move could fall through due to issues relating to the proposed payment structure, but the deadlock was soon broken and Fabinho underwent a medical. A statement from Liverpool ends: "Everyone at Liverpool FC would like to thank Fabinho for all of his contributions to the club's successes during the last five years." Fabinho becomes the second Liverpool midfielder to seal a move to the Saudi Pro League after former club captain Jordan Henderson left Anfield to reunite with old teammate Steven Gerrard at Al Ettifaq. Chelsea 2-0 Fulham: Player ratings as the Blues win Premier League Summer Series

Goals from Thiago Silva and Christopher Nkunku were enough for Chelsea to see off Fulham and claim the Premier League Summer Series trophy in the USA. The Blues won two of their three Game s in the pre-season tournament to earn the trophy. After a rather timid, very pre-season, opening 20 minutes, Chelsea broke the deadlock through veteran Thiago Silva. The defender rose highest at the near post from a corner kick to cannon a header past Bernd Leno and into the back of the net. The Blues looked the much more likely to nab the second goal of the Game thereafter, with Ben Chilwell forcing the Fulham goalkeeper into a smart save with a venomous strike from the left of the box. In the 35th minute, Enzo Fernandez would miss a gilt-edged chance to make it 2-0. Following a sweeping counter attack led by Raheem Sterling, Christopher Nkunku received the ball and teed up Fernandez perfectly for a first-time strike on goal. His subsequent effort, however, was tame and straight at Leno. Chelsea

Mounting job vacancies push state and local governments into a wage war for workers

Pay is rising for many public sector employees as governments try to compete for new workers and stem a tide of retirements and resignations FULTON, Mo. -- At the entrance to Missouri prisons, large signs plead for help: “NOW HIRING” ... “GREAT PAY & BENEFITS." No experience is necessary. Anyone 18 and older can apply. Long hours are guaranteed. Though the assertion of “great pay” for prison guards would have seemed dubious in the past, a series of state pay raises prompted by widespread vacancies has finally made a difference. The Missouri Department of Corrections set a record for new applicants last month. “After we got our raise, we started seeing people come out of the woodwork, people that hadn’t worked in a while,” said Maj. Albin Narvaez, chief of custody at the Fulton Reception and Diagnostic Center, where new prisoners are housed and evaluated. Public employers across the U.S. have faced similar struggles to fill jobs, leading to one of the largest surges in state go

Barcelona learn Champions League ban fate over Negreira case

UEFA have confirmed that Barcelona have been granted provisional access to the 2023/24 Champions League after suspending their investigation of the Negreira case. Payments to a former referee official led to widespread condemnation for Barcelona, who were accused of bribery and threatened with a ban from European competition if they were found guilty. Barcelona president Joan Laporta has long insisted the club have broken no rules and have nothing to hide, vowing to work with UEFA while the governing body investigated the payments and allegations against the club. Now, UEFA have confirmed they have suspended their investigations and have not found any reason to ban Barcelona from the Champions League . It is stressed that UEFA's ruling is simply provisional and is not final as ethics and disciplinary inspectors from inside the organisation continue to evaluate the facts available and can request a punishment for Barcelona if any evidence of wrongdoing is found. Several ministers out as Trudeau shakes up Canada's Cabinet

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will announce a major Cabinet shake-up as he redies his team for the next federal election TORONTO -- Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will announce a major Cabinet shake-up on Wednesday as he readies his team for the next federal election. Trudeau is removing several Cabinet ministers, including Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino and Transport Minister Omar Alghabra. Medicino, Algabra and several others confirmed the moves before a swearing-in ceremony for new ministers. New ministers were also expected in defense, justice, heritage, fisheries and procurement. At least four ministers are out after saying they wouldn't run in the next election, which must take place by October 2025, but it could be called well before then. Polls indicate Trudeau’s Liberal Party is trailing the rival Conservatives. Trudeau channeled the star power of his father, the Liberal icon and late Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, when he first won in 2015, but Sc

California aims to tap beavers, once viewed as a nuisance, to help with water issues and wildfires

Beavers have long been treated as a nuisance for chewing down trees and shrubs and blocking up streams For years, beavers have been treated as an annoyance for chewing down trees and shrubs and blocking up streams, leading to flooding in neighborhoods and farms. But the animal is increasingly being seen as nature's helper in the midst of climate change. California recently changed its tune and is embracing the animals that can create lush habitats that lure species back into now-urban areas, enhance groundwater supplies and buffer against the threat of wildfires. A new policy that went into effect last month encourages landowners and agencies dealing with beaver damage to seek solutions such as putting flow devices in streams or protective wrap on trees before seeking permission from the state to kill the animals. The state is also running pilot projects to relocate beavers to places where they can be more beneficial. The aim is to preserve more beavers, along with their nature-fri

The stock market has soared this year, but will it last? Experts weigh in

The Nasdaq has climbed roughly 36% this year; while the S&P 500 has jumped 18%. As long-standing recession alarms continue to blare from some forecasters, investors don’t appear to hear them. The S &P 500 -- the index that most people's 401(k)s track -- has climbed more than 18% since the start of this year, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq has jumped a staggering 35%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average, which has jumped some 6% this year, notched its eighth consecutive day of gains on Wednesday, the longest such streak since 2019. The blockbuster stock market performance this year owes much to a significant cooldown of i NFL ation that has bolstered expectations that the Federal Reserve can bring price hikes to normal levels without causing a severe downturn, analysts told ABC News. Those analysts also noted that enthusiasm about artificial intelligence has provided a boost for major tech stocks that are disproportionately reflected in the gains of major indices weighted toward

Teamsters and UPS to resume negotiations next week as contract deadline approaches

The Teamsters said Wednesday they will resume contract negotiations with UPS next week, marking an end to a stalemate that began two weeks ago when both sides walked away from talks while blaming each other NEW YORK -- The Teamsters said Wednesday they will resume contract negotiations with UPS next week, marking an end to a stalemate that began two weeks ago when both sides walked away from talks while blaming each other. The union, which represents 340,000 UPS workers, credited the picketing and rallies it’s been holding across the country for getting the delivery company back to the negotiating table before the current contract expires on July 31. It said UPS reached out to resume negotiations . In a prepared statement, the company confirmed negations will resume next week and said it was pleased to go back and “resolve the few remaining open issues.” Before contract talks broke down, both sides had reached tentative agreements on several issues, including installing air condit
