Karl Anthony Towns, Anthony Edwards injury updates: Wolves stars could return Wednesday vs. Hawks, per report

The Minnesota Timberwolves are holding onto their playoff hopes by a thread right now. They had a big win on Monday against the New York Knicks, but they are still just 36-37 and lead the No. 11-seeded Los Angeles Lakers in the standings by only one Game . Fortunately, they are expecting reinforcements in the very near future. According to The Athletic's Shams Charania, both Karl-Anthony Towns and Anthony Edwards could return to the lineup as soon as Wednesday against the Atlanta Hawks. Towns has been out since November due to a Grade 3 calf strain. He reportedly suffered a setback in his rehabilitation earlier in the season, and has therefore been out roughly four months, but now the Timberwolves are expecting to get their All-Star big man back in the fold quickly. Edwards suffered what looked like a scary ankle injury in Thursday's loss to the Chicago Bulls when he seemingly sprained his ankle and neede...

NBA Power Rankings: 76ers take No. 1 spot as Knicks, Nuggets stumble; Kings and Lakers move up

As novelist Chuck Palahniuk writes in his anthology, Burnt Tongues : "Yes, Icarus fell to earth after flying too close to the sun, but what a glorious fall it must have been." After reaching the No. 1 spot for the first time this season, the New York Knicks fell victim to the NBA Power Ran kings curse, losing three straight Game s before Sunday's win to conclude their all too brief moment in the spotlight. Waiting to take their place, like an eager understudy, were the Philadelphia 76ers , owners of the league's longest winning streak after a perfect week. Meanwhile, the Sacramento Kings just keep on lighting the beam, enough to raise them six spots all the way to No. 2. Another team moving up is the Los Angeles Lakers, whose new pieces have gelled quickly enough to earn praise from the injured LeBron James . On the other side are the Denver Nuggets, who fall six spots this week after some unch...

Warriors 'winning the right way' ahead of Stephen Curry's return, but still must overcome one major roadblock

SAN FRANCISCO -- Klay Thompson was styling. Jordan Poole was smiling. Jonathan Kuminga was posterizing. Pure jubilation exuded from Chase Center as the Golden State Warriors closed out a 5-0 homestand with another comeback win, this time a 108-99 affair against the New Orleans Pelicans on Friday. Most impressive was the fact that they won every Game without the aid of Andrew Wiggins, who is out indefinitely due to a family matter, and Stephen Curry, who is expected to make his return from lower leg injuries on Sunday. This is just the second five-game winning streak of the season for the Warriors, who have sought momentum like a missing remote control for the entirety of their baffling 2022 title defense. They're now four games above .500 for the first time this season, within a single game of the fourth-seeded Phoenix Suns in the Western Conference. Golden State's other five- Game streak, interestingl...

Stephen Curry intends to return Sunday vs. Lakers barring a setback, per report

Stephen Curry intends to return to the floor Sunday when the Golden State Warriors host the Los Angeles Lakers barring setbacks between now and then, according to Bleacher Report's Chris Haynes. Curry has been out since he suffered partial tears in two lower-leg li Game nts on Feb. 4 against the Dallas Mavericks. Curry has missed time with both this leg injury and a shoulder injury earlier in the season, but when he has been on the floor, he has had one of the best seasons of his illustrious career. He is currently averaging 29.4 points per Game , the third-highest mark of his career, and his effective field goal percentage of 61.9 percent trails only his historic 2016 unanimous MVP season. Despite playing in only 38 Game s thus far this season, he still ranks eighth in the NBA with 185 made 3-pointers on the season. Golden State has rallied as a team despite Curry's absence. They had won their past th...

Giannis Antetokounmpo injury update: Bucks star doubtful for 2021 NBA Finals rematch with Suns on Sunday

MILWAUKEE --  Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo is doubtful for his team's 2021 NBA Finals rematch with the Phoenix Suns on Sunday due to a right quad contusion. Antetokounmpo suffered the injury in the first quarter of the Bucks' 128-99 victory over the Miami Heat on Friday night -- a result that gave Milwaukee the longest winning streak in the league this season at 13 games.  A team spokesperson initially said that Antetokounmpo "knocked knees" with a Heat player, which Bucks head coach Mike Budenholzer confirmed during his postgame press conference. After further evaluation, however, the team is now calling it a quad contusion.  "We'll see how he feels tomorrow," Budenholzer said following the win over the Heat. "Just evaluate him and take it day-by-day."  With just over a minute remaining in the first quarter, Antetokounmpo briefly posted up on the right ...

2023 NBA All-Star Saturday Night: Mac McClung vaults from G League to Slam Dunk champion

For the first time, the NBA invited a G-League player to the Slam Dunk Contest, and for the first time, a G-Leaguer is now the NBA Slam Dunk champion . Mac McClung, recently signed to a two-way deal with the Philadelphia 76ers, has spent this season playing for the Delaware Blue Coats, but when he faced off against three NBA players the league chose, he took them down and earned the trophy with four of the best dunks the contest has seen in years. The first involved quite a bit of showmanship. McClung jumped over two people -- with one sitting on another one's shoulders -- grabbed the ball from the higher of the two, tapped the ball off the backboard before throwing it down. MAC MCCLUNG 😳#ATTSlamDunk pic.twitter.com/0wuoeaeqc6 — NBA on TNT (@NBAonTNT) February 19, 2023 The second was a bit more traditional. McClung did a 360 with a two-handed pump and slam. ...

NBA must fix its load management problem by working with players to protect the popularity of the NBA

Hit 'em where it hurts. That seems to be the idea behind an idea first reported by The Athletic that would go after the overabundance of load management by tying NBA awards to games played for the players striving to win them. Though short on details, the notion centers on making a number of appearances a key factor for the big honors handed out each season.  Load management has, clearly, gone too far. Fans missing out on seeing stars, over and over, for rest disguised as injuries. There are too many instances to list.  The NBA has a real problem here. This idea, floated in the media, nebulous in its details though it may be, has a ring of potential to it. Yet in conversations with decision makers around the league, the idea of using awards to force players to play more games had two common responses: It's a great idea. And fat chance it works -- or even happens. ...

NBA trade rumors: Bulls showing little interest in moving Zach LaVine; Wizards want to keep Bradley Beal

The 2023 NBA trade deadline is rapidly approaching. Teams now have three days to finalize their remaining business before the trade market is closed for the season at 3 p.m. ET on Thursday, Feb. 9. Some teams, like the Brooklyn Nets and Dallas Mavericks , may look to get things done ahead of time, but others will be working the phones right up until the final minutes.  As the rumor mill continues to churn, here's a look at some of the latest news and notes from around the league: Bulls showing little interest in trading LaVine The Chicago Bulls are one of the must-watch teams heading into the deadline. For all the talent on the roster, they have not been able to put things together, and with more than half of the season now gone they are still stuck under .500 at 25-27 -- a mark that has them in ninth place in the Eastern Conference.  All possibilities are on the table for them. They could trade everyone, get...

Markelle Fultz 'thankful' for time with 76ers ahead of first game in Philadelphia since 2019 trade

It's been a tumultuous road for former No. 1 overall pick Markelle Fultz since being selected by the Philadelphia 76ers back in 2017. After averaging over 23 points per game in college and entering the draft with high praise for his two-way game, Fultz's career unraveled almost immediately due to injuries. A complicated shoulder injury, which received significant attention during his time in Philadelphia, limited Fultz to just 33 games over his two years with the Sixers. Following an unsuccessful start to his career in Phildelphia, the Sixers traded Fultz to the Orlando Magic at the 2019 NBA trade deadline, where he's remained since.  Injuries have again been an issue for Fultz during his time with the Magic, most notably an ACL tear just eight Game s into the 2020-21 season which sidelined him for much of the following year as well. He also suffered a fractured toe to start this season, but since retu...

Ahead of the NBA's slate of games Friday night, coaches, players and NBPA shared thoughts and statements on death of Tyre Nichols, a 29-year-old Black man who was brutally beaten by five officers of the Memphis Police Department while handcuffed in early January. Recordings of the beating, which were captured by the officers' body cameras as well as a street surveillance camera, were released to the public Friday night. The incident followed a traffic stop in Memphis on Jan. 7, and Nichols, who had been hospitalized since the beating, died on Jan. 10 as a result of the injuries he sustained, officials said. The five officers, who are Black, were fired on Jan. 20 and charged with variety of crimes, including second-degree murder, on Jan. 26.
