Gabriel Magalhaes reveals how Mikel Arteta convinced him to stay at Arsenal

Image
Gabriel Magalhaes has admitted a talk with manager Mikel Arteta helped convince him to stay at Arsenal last summer. The Brazilian centre-back was a regular starter last season but was benched for the start of the current campaign until injuries to Jurrien Timber and Thomas Partey forced Arteta to rethink his tactical tweak. Saudi Arabian officials lodged their interest in Gabriel at the time but the defender has now praised Arteta for showing him that he still had a future at the Emirates. "It was tough, obviously at the start. I wanted to play and it was very difficult for me but I understood what the coach had to do," Gabriel told PA . "It is difficult for any player to not be in the team but now I’m back in I want to keep on working hard to prove my worth. "He [Arteta] spoke to me and obviously explained the reasons behind the decision, why I should stay – but the most important thing was to remain focused and concentrate. He knew how important I was to the tea...

Should Old Trafford be knocked down or renovated?

Image
Manchester United are at an important moment their 146-year history. Sir Jim Ratcliffe's arrival as a 25% shareholder sees the British billionaire also take over sporting operations at the club and with it a shift in control rarely witnessed over the last century and a half. Although the Glazer family retain overall majority ownership, Ratcliffe and his INEOS contingent will be calling the shots when it comes to what fans value most – the Football . That covers the players and Football staff, but also looks set to address the future of Old Trafford too. In a report by the Daily Telegraph , Ratcliffe is described by a source close to him as wanting Old Trafford to become a "Wembley of the north". Right now, it has lost its sparkle. United moved into Old Trafford in 1910, the club's third home since being formed as Newton Heath in 1878. Bank Street was where they had played since 1893, through near bankruptcy and the name change to 'Manchester United',  winning...

Pep Guardiola reveals expected Erling Haaland return date

Image
Pep Guardiola doesn't expect Erling Haaland to return to action for Manchester City until early February, with the Norwegian still nursing a foot injury. Haaland hasn't played since City's 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa on December 6, missing the club's last four Premier League games and the Club World Cup. City have kept their cool in Haaland's absence, picking up 10 points from a possible 12 in the Premier League, and recently welcomed Kevin De Bruyne back to soften the blow of missing their lead talisman. Julian Alvarez and Phil Foden have stepped up in the goalscoring department for City, and they'll need to be at their best when the champions take on Newcastle United at St James' Park in Saturday's late game. Speaking to the media at his pre-match press conference, Guardiola confirmed that Haaland is still not ready to return to action, admitting his bone-related issue has gone on a little longer than the club had initially expect ed. "A little b...

Anthony Martial makes decision on January transfer - report

Image
Anthony Martial is reported to have rejected the idea of leaving Manchester United during the current transfer window, instead determined to stay until the end of his contract. The striker, who has seen his playing reduced in recent years due to a combination of injuries and lack of form, has entered the final six months of the long-term deal he signed back in 2019. Martial has been firmly replaced as Erik ten Hag’s preferred 'number nine' by £72m signing Rasmus Hojlund, despite the Dane's young age and lack of Premier League goals. But rather than look to take his career elsewhere this month, Sky Sports has reported the Frenchman is keen to stay. It is said that Martial has rebuffed interest from Marseille and Fenerbahce, as well the Saudi Pro League, with the intention of fighting for his place at United for at least the short-term. 90min revealed last month that United are unlikely to trigger an option in Martial's contract that would extend it on its current ter...

Ian Maatsen to join Borussia Dortmund on loan but sign new Chelsea contract

Image
Chelsea are understood to have agreed a deal with Borussia Dortmund to send Dutch defender Ian Maatsen on loan to the German side until the end of the season. The Blues accepted a bid from Burnley last summer that would have seen Maatsen join the Clarets permanently for £31.5m this year, but the 21-year-old turned down the offer and has since managed under 400 minutes across all com Pet itions this season, despite injuries to both Ben Chilwell and Marc Cucurella. Having entered the final 18 months of his original contract , Maatsen was again made available this month and Dortmund quickly showed interest, although reports suggest they were reluctant to agree to Chelsea's demand of an obligatory purchase clause. Instead, the two clubs have agreed on a straight loan which will see Maatsen spend the next six months with Dortmund before returning to Chelsea in the summer. Fabrizio Romano notes Maatsen has also agreed to a new two-year extension with Chelsea that will take his contract ...

Erling Haaland injury: Progress & potential return date for Man City

Image
Erling Haaland has been spending more time on the sidelines than he or Manchester City would have expected this season, and that seemingly set to continue into 2024. The Norwegian striker has 14 Premier League goals to his name this season but that number would undoubtedly be higher were he able to stay off of the treatment table. His absence has come at the same time as a poor run of form for Man City, although they did come from behind and beat Everton in their penultimate game of 2023. Julian Alvarez has been stepping up in Haaland's absence and the depth of their squad means that they can generally cope with anything, but missing Haaland at the same time as Kevin De Bruyne is going to cause any club some trouble. Here is the latest news about Haaland's condition, his expected return, and what Pep Guardiola has to say about the matter. When will Erling Haaland return from injury? Brighton vs Tottenham - Premier League: TV channel, team news, lineups and prediction

Image
It's a battle of the idealists on Thursday evening as Roberto De Zerbi's Brighton host Ange Postecoglou's Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League. While Spurs were fortunate to escape with a 2-1 win over Everton at the weekend, their third straight victory suggests Postecoglou's fast-starters are back on track after recently enduring a five- Game winless run. A pre-Christmas upsurge has seen Tottenham climb back up the table and within touching distance of the league leaders. Brighton, meanwhile, have had difficulties managing the extra burden of Europa League Football . Their domestic form has been patchy at best this term, with De Zerbi's circuit-based routines perhaps becoming somewhat predictable. The Seagulls have also been dealing with a mountain of injuries, and currently sit ninth in the table. Here's 90min's preview of Tottenham's festive trip to Brighton. What time does Brighton vs Tottenham kick-off? Location : Brighton, England Stadium : Am...

The favourites to win the Ballon d'Or 2024 - ranked

Image
Lionel Messi's record-extending eighth Ballon d'Or success came as a surprise to absolutely nobody in the footballing world. The legendary Argentine had led his country to the 2022 World Cup after all, where he arguably cemented his place as the greatest footballer to have ever played the game. Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe were his nearest challengers in 2023, both enjoying exceptional years of their own. Haaland scored 54 goals in all competitions during the eligibility period, while Mbappe led France to back-to-back appearances in the World Cup final, sensationally scoring a hat-trick against Argentina (albeit in an eventual losing effort) to scoop the Golden Boot. All three are expected to be in contention once more in 2024, despite Messi's move to Inter Miami at club level, but there's plenty of other players who may feel they are in with a chance of being crowned the best player in the world. Here's  90min's  favourites for the award. 15. Lionel Messi (...
