The F1 rankings in which Mercedes beat Red Bull in 2022

F1 teams and drivers are allocated a certain number of engine components during a season, with those who exceed this amount being issued with a penalty.

Many penalties were given out during 2022 for those who went above the number of parts listed below:

    • Internal Combustion Engine (ICE): 3
    • Turbo Charger (TC): 3
    • MGU-H: 3
    • MGU-K: 3
    • Energy Store (ES): 2
    • Control Electronics (CE): 2
    • Exhaust (EX): 8

Now that the season is over, the rankings of who went through the highest – and lowest – number of engine components show some interesting results.

Mercedes most reliable, Ferrari and Renault least

Ferrari and Renault experienced the most engine changes in 2022, with both manufacturers experiencing issues with reliability.

Valtteri Bottas – whose Alfa Romeo uses a Ferrari power unit – recorded a particularly high number of components used, having been through six ICEs, seven TCs and seven MGU-Hs during the campaign.

The main Ferrari squad used up 12 ICEs, and Alpine went through the same amount.

Red Bull were not far behind on 10. However, it has become a common tactic for teams to use a fourth engine at a strategically favourable circuit and take the grid penalty.

The number of ICEs used did not stop the Milton Keynes-based squad from clinching both championships in dominant style.

Mercedes, meanwhile, proved to be the most reliable engine of 2022. Five of the eight drivers using the manufacturer's power units stayed within the allotted amount, with only George Russell, Lewis Hamilton and Lando Norris using a fourth engine.
