No. 1 pick Victor Wembanyama has, to absolutely nobody's surprise, opened as an odds-on favorite to take the top honors among next year's freshman class.

Favorite to win NBA Rookie of the Year

Victor Wembanyama (-225)

Just when people were beginning to wonder if Gregg Popovich wasn't finally ready to hang it up, the Spurs struck lottery gold, landing Wembanyama in the capable hands of arguably the greatest coach in NBA history. 

The roster around him will be mostly painful, but that's not really the point. Wemby's a generational prospect who's had the entire league drooling over him, and will be given every opportunity to contribute out of the gate, under the best possible tutelage. 

The last two first-overall picks the Spurs had were first-ballot Hall-of-Fame big men. They know what they're doing here.

Scoot Henderson (+300)

A prospect who'd be a healthy No. 1 pick in other years, Henderson's stock was complicated by the point-guard-having Hornets and Blazers owning the second and third picks.

Henderson wound up in Portland, where Damian Lillard's murky status leaves Scoot's role unclear. In either case, the newcomer is an explosive menace with a sleek handle and high basketball IQ, whose athleticism and ridiculous 6'9" wingspan make up for his diminutive status (standing 6'2").

He's yet to develop a consistent long-range jumper, but he's a workhorse and barely 19 — there's still plenty of time for him to layer that on top of what's already an extensive offensive skill set. 

Chet Holmgren (+450)

Forgotten among all the Wembanyama hype is that another "unicorn" prospect will be making his debut this season. 

Holmgren spent the entire 2022-23 season on the chilling list with a foot injury, leaving him eligible for this year's ROY. He'll be plugged into a Thunder roster that roundly overachieved last season, albeit with a gaping hole at center.

Conveniently, the 7-foot-1 Holmgren brings a diverse skill set and could take on a variety of roles for a team suddenly taking its playoff prospects very seriously.
